Chapter fourteen

Callistus

We scoured through many hefty tomes that contained information I’d never heard of in the centuries of my life. About old human civilizations living on the surface of the world. Demons and devils alike forced underground, only able to feed on souls of the damned. How Gods had ruled over the world until the world revolted against them. Things that could not possibly be true... Things like angels that lived amongst man, both noble and fallen. That bred with man, that created thin blood lines that were rarer than even half-blooded fiends.

Things that Uz’gith and Brol’guug apparently believed to be true.

I sighed in exasperation. None of it was helpful to our current cause. Nothing that I found, nor Zehra. She who looked so tired, with dark purple underneath her tired eyes. But then Odessa slammed her current book down, skimmed the pages and shoved it forward as her fingers pushed against its already decaying pages.

“Seals.”

“I thought we were looking for information about the Nephilim?” Zehra yawned as she shoved her own tome away. I grabbed it from my side of the table and slid it atop the stack of the books we’d read.

“Unless they’re connected,” I said. I leaned back against the wall behind her with a thunk, letting my weight fall hard.

“They are. It’s in this tome.” Another prodding of Odessa’s digit against the hardened book had Zehra’s eyes open up with curiosity.

“That’s the last book I got you. I thought it was just full of fairytales.”

“It’s not fairytales, if it’s to be trusted. Nor myth and legend. It’s reality.” Slowly, she read off things from the inside. Similar to the statues of said legend in the Vault of Wonder. How the demons came to be on the earth once more. And how, in time, man was placed in eternal torment by their fiendish overlords, as the original human with the blood of the Nephilim desired for the betrayal her fellow man caused her.

“Flashes of light, rapid healing of self and others, holy powers are theirs alone. No man nor fiend could bring aid in such a manner. They alone, with their power in full, can destroy the seal.” Odessa continued, while I shared a tired glance with Zehra. Her light at the manor. How fast the wounds formed on my face... the same? Was she... ?

“However, there’s something more to this. The seal, while able to be destroyed by Nephilim, has other purpose. Whoever holds the seal, controls it and the kingdom its attached to. The demons within their city would be bound to serve the controller of the gem, should you choose to wield it instead.” She took a deep breath. “Destroying a seal will destroy the kingdoms, but all kingdoms have seals. Each one, destroyed, would eventually allow the floodgates of the Heavens to pour down, and essentially allow angels to walk the earth once more. To bring lawful justice to the lands, bringing equality to all.”

“Does that mean all fiends would be killed in the process?” I asked.
